192.168.0.1 – Default Router Login IP

Last Updated on

192.168.0.1 is a private i.e. default IP address used by the two of the most popular wireless router brand names today D-Link and Netgear. Of course there are other router companies which use this private IP but we will mention them later.

As you may already know, all wireless routers come pre-configured with a default IP address, username and password which enables the user to access the router settings and modify them according to its needs. Since all of us are a bit worried about the security of our wireless home network it is recommended to change at least the default password in order to increase the overall security of the home network.

192.168.0.1 as a Private IP and a Default IP address

Don’t be confused when you read that 192.168.0.1 is a private IPv4 address and in another sentence we say that it is a default IP address. Let’s discuss this a little.

Private IP Address

When we say that an IP address is private we mean that you can only access it from your home PC only. It can’t be accessed from the internet or another PC which is not part of your private network. Additionally inside one private network this IP can exist only once. And every network can use this IP address. However, if for some reason two devices get the same IP address in the same network, it will become unstable and a so called IP conflict will occur. It must be solved as soon as possible by assigning a different IP address to one of the devices with this IP.

Default IP Address

Most router manufacturers today use IP addresses from the private IP range as default IP addresses for their routers. The so called default IP address is assigned to all routers in the factory and along with the default username and password it makes it easy for the end user to setup the router or work on the security of its private home network. Since the IP and login details are the same for a huge number of routers it is important to change at least the default login details in order to secure the home network.

How to login to the router using 192.168.0.1?

The router login process is pretty easy and simple and is generally the same for all routers no matter what brand they are.

  • First you start your browser and in the URL bar (not the Search bar) type 192.168.0.1 or copy/paste one of the login URLs we have provided.

type 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar

  • If the IP 192.168.0.1 is correct the login page will appear and you will be requested to enter the default username and password for your router.

the router login page

  • If the login details are correct you will see the router’s settings page where you can change many different things like the wireless network name and password, encryption type, port forwarding and so on.

Note: Don’t forget that the computer or the laptop you use to login to the router MUST be connected to your home network, otherwise you won’t be able to login.

If your internet connection is bad or not working at all you have nothing to worry about since in order to login to your router doesn’t require an active Internet connection. You simply access the router settings page and not some website online. In some cases it is advised to turn off your antivirus software or firewall, just to avoid some issues.

D-Link and Netgear Router Login Details

Although the D-Link and Netgear login IP is the same, the login details are not, so if you want to access the router settings you will have to know the following details.

D-Link router login

Generally all D-Link routers can be accessed by typing 192.168.0.1 in the browser’s URL bar or using these URLs:

http://dlinkrouter.local

http://dlinkrouter

You can either click on them or COPY/PASTE them in the browser’s URL bar. When the login page appears use the following details:

Router username: admin

Router password: (leave this field blank)

(in case the IP listed above doesn’t open the login page, check your router default IP using the command prompt and the IPCONFIG command)

Netgear router login

Netgear routers use either 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 as their default IP address. However, you can also use these URLs:

www.routerlogin.com

www.routerlogin.net

When the login page appears use the following details:

Router username: admin

Router password: password or 1234

Newer models have these login details on a label underneath the router so it’s a good idea to check it or look at the user manual.

What other router brands use this IP address as a default one?

D-Link and Netgear don’t have an exclusive right to this default IP so there are also other router manufacturers who use 192.168.0.1 to help us access the router configuration page. Please take a look at the list below. Please note that we have added a login URL where applicable which can be used instead of the IP.

Sitecom routers

Login URL: http://sitecom.router

Router username: admin

Router password: admin (or check the back label on the bottom of your router)

Sky routers

Login URL: –

Router username: admin

Router password: sky

TP-Link routers

Alternate Login IP: 192.168.1.1

Login URL: http://tplinklogin.net

Router username: admin

Router password: admin

Tenda routers

Login URL:

Router username: admin

Router password: admin

AT&T routers

Login URL: http://ATT.Router

Router username: admin

Router password: leave it blank

NOTE: In case the default login details do not work, the password might have been changed by the previous owner if you have a second-hand wireless router or by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Therefore you can either contact your ISP for help or hard-reset the router which will force the router to use the default username and password as listed above.

Accessing the router settings is easy, but we don’t recommend you to alter any of the settings if you don’t have experience doing that.

The listed router brands may also use some other IP addresses as a default IP address so if the login page doesn’t appear try to find the right IP address of your router.

Of course, although you have confirmed that 192.168.0.1 is the right default IP, the login page won’t appear because of the following reason.

Unable to connect to 192.168.o.1? See why.

Have you experienced the following? You have just read a tutorial explaining how to secure your router or upgrade your router firmware. You enter your router’s default IP address and the login page doesn’t appear. You try again and again, and still nothing.

Well, one of the most common mistakes when people try to access their router settings (mainly users having Netgear or D-link routers) is that they try to login to their router using 192.168.o.1 as a default IP address. All the time they will get the following message in their Mozilla Firefox browser:

Server not found

Firefox can’t find the server at 192.168.o.1.

Server not found message in Firefox

Other browsers like Internet Explorer and Google Chrome will provide Bing search results for “192.168.o.1” instead.

What is the problem with 192.168.o.1?

According to the definition an IP address is a string of numbers. This string is consisted of four groups of numbers separated by periods.

As you can see, the letter “o” has nothing to do here. So, as you have already guessed, the reason for this is a simple typing mistake. Instead of 192.168.o.1 you have to type the right IP address – 192.168.0.1

When you check your router’s IP address some of us simply make a mistake and type the letter “o” instead of the number “0”. So if you have been trying to access your Netgear or D-Link router using just 192.168.o.1 and had no success, try the right IP this time. We are sure that the login screen will appear.

After you enter the right username and password you can continue with your plans to either secure the router or upgrade the firmware or do something else.

http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1 – Which one to use?

Logging to your D-Link wireless router is quite simple and easy, and we will talk about it in this post, but what might confuse some users is whether they should use http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1 to login successfully.

http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1
http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1

Well, the answer is simple – you can actually use both of them to login to your D-Link router. However, let’s see what the difference is.

http://192.168.0.1

192.168.0.1 is a default router IP address used by D-Link and some other major router manufacturers. This means that specific router models can be accessed and configured using the same IP (in this case 192.168.0.1) as well as the same username and password combination.

Although this is a great thing, it also represents a great security threat to your personal Wi-Fi network.

This is the reason why it is recommended to change the default IP and login details during the initial setup process together with the default Network Name (SSID) and default Wi-Fi password.

Note that it is not necessary to add http:// in front of the IP because most browsers today add it automatically for you.

http://dlinkrouter.local

This link represents another way to login to your D-Link router. It is a good option to use in case you can’t log in to the router using the IP mentioned above.

How to login using http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1?

We’ll try to keep this as simple as possible.

First of all launch your web browser. Then in the address bar (not the Search bar) type:

or

When the login window appears type the default login details:

Username: admin

Password: leave it blank for now

After that clock OK or Log in.

If the router default settings haven’t been changed before you will see the D-Link admin page.

Now there are numerous settings which can be modified, but we recommend changing the following:

  • Default router password
  • Default Network Name (SSID)
  • Set encryption to WPA2 Personal
  • Default wireless password.

Changing just these settings will significantly increase the security of your personal network. However, make sure you write down these details in case you need them later.

Final thoughts

We had to mention that the IP or the link has to be entered in the URL bar because this is one of the reasons why the login window doesn’t show up and users fail to login to their router. The same thing can happen if you mistype the D-Link default router IP address: 192.168.o.1 instead of 192.168.0.1.

Just pay attention and there won’t be any problems.

As you can see, in order to login to your D-Link router you can use either http://dlinkrouter.local or http://192.168.0.1

It’s that simple.
